Nigeria’s governors forum has on Wednesday July 19 set up a six man committee to explore the option of actualizing state police in the country.
The committee which has in its ranks representatives from the country’s six geo-political zones was mandated to come up with a blue print on state policing in efforts to turn around security challenges facing the country.
Vanguard reported that the governor’s reached this position after a closed-door meeting which has in attendance Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris at the Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa.

Chairman of Governors Forum and Zamfara state Governor, Abdulaziz Yari disclosed this while briefing State House Correspondents after the meeting.
He said: “We discussed and we received presentation from the Inspector General of Police. He made a presentation to us canvassing for the support to introduce media outfits, radio and television for the force and as well the Police to go technologically from the manual of doing things.
“The Inspector General of Police dominated the whole day of our discussion today understanding what the issue of Police is into the system whereby in some other nations it is ten to one person but in Nigeria we have four hundred to one.

So, the Inspector General of Police made us to know that there is a kind of trust fund bill which is before the National Assembly, asked for our support and the members of the national assembly especially the House of Representatives.
“In our own part, we have put a committee in place. It is headed by the governors of Kwara, Imo, Delta, Ekiti, Bauchi and Sokoto to lead the committee so that they can be able to interface with the committee of Police and take the matter before the Acting President for further action. It is important for our nation.
“And as well there is the issue of kind of state police which is being discussed and we coming with so many options which we are expecting the committee will do the and find safe way of policing in Nigeria .”
The IGP while speaking on the outcome of the meeting with the governor’s forum said: “Our efforts to address some of the challenges in the Police unit. Abdulsalami Abubakar reveals those sponsoring hate speech in the country

- Abdulsalami Abubakar blamed failed politicians for rising tension in the country

- The Peace Committee chairman said the country was also going through bad governance

- He said hate speech was not in the interest of the country

Abdulsalami Abubakar has accused politicians who have failed to deliver their mandate to their people as being behind the call for the disintegration of the country.

There has been rising call for the break-up of the country fuelled by Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People Of Biafra while the quit notice issued to Igbos by Arewa youths has also strained relationship between ethnic groups in the country.

According to report, the National Peace committee headed by the former head of state in a statement condemned the spate of rising hate speech saying it was not in the best interest of the country.

The committee also noted that this trend was a result of bad governance in the country.

“In this regard, the National Peace Committee acknowledges that the drums of rising division also reflect the perceptions by our citizens that there is poor governance in Nigeria today.

“Politicians who have failed in delivering on the mandate of the electorate for better livelihoods and neighbourhoods have, instead, found common cause with advocates of division and hate.

“In many parts of the country, young people who have been left without means of livelihood or hope in their future have become converts to radicalisation preached by demagogues in various guises including ethnicity and religion.”

Meanwhile, A former governor of Abia, Dr Orji Kalu, said that Nigeria has 'gone past quit notice' as the various ethnic groups that make up the country have lived harmoniously for many years.

Kalu, who was referring to the quit notice issued to Igbo people to leave northern Nigeria by Arewa youths, said everything possible should be done to strengthen the unity of the country.

Kalu said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday July 10 that Nigeria had come to stay but suggested that the country should go back to regionalism.

The All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain said no strong politician would promote ethnicity and urged all hands to be on the deck to strengthen Nigeria’s unity.
